What Data We Collect and Why

Comments

If you leave a comment on the site, we collect:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your website (if you provide it)
  • Your IP address
  • Your browser type (to help us detect spam)

Your email address may be sent to Gravatar to check if you have a profile picture linked to it. You can read Gravatar’s privacy policy at automattic.com/privacy. If you do have a Gravatar, your profile picture will be visible next to your comment once it’s approved.

Images

If you upload images to this site, avoid uploading photos that contain embedded location data (known as EXIF GPS data). Other visitors can potentially download your images and extract that location information from them.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files that get saved on your device when you visit a website. Here’s how this site uses them:

If you leave a comment:

  • You can opt in to saving your name, email, and website in cookies so you don’t have to fill them in again next time
  • These cookies last for one year

If you visit the login page:

  • A temporary cookie is set to check if your browser accepts cookies
  • This cookie contains no personal data and is deleted when you close your browser

If you log in to the site:

  • Cookies are set to remember your login and display settings
  • Login cookies last two days, or two weeks if you select “Remember Me”
  • Display setting cookies last one year
  • These cookies are removed when you log out

Google Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics to help us understand how visitors use the site. This includes information such as:

  • Which pages are visited and how often
  • How long visitors spend on the site
  • What country or region visitors are from
  • What device and browser visitors are using
  • How visitors found the site (e.g. Google search, direct link)

Google Analytics collects this data using cookies. The data is anonymous and we cannot use it to identify you personally.

You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking across all websites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

For more information on how Google handles data, visit google.com/analytics/terms.

Embedded Content

Some articles may include embedded content from other websites, such as videos or images. When you interact with that content, it behaves as if you’ve visited that website directly.

Those third-party websites may:

  • Collect data about you
  • Use their own cookies
  • Track your interaction with their content

This is especially relevant if you’re logged in to those platforms (e.g. YouTube, social media).

Who We Share Your Data With

We don’t sell your data. Full stop.

The only exceptions are:

  • Spam detection: Comments are run through an automated spam detection service
  • Password resets: If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email
  • Google Analytics: Anonymised usage data is shared with Google as described above

How Long We Keep Your Data

  • Comments: Kept indefinitely so we can manage follow-up comments and moderation
  • User accounts: If you have an account, your profile data is stored until you request deletion
  • Analytics data: Google Analytics data is retained according to Google’s own data retention policies

Your Rights Over Your Data

You have the right to:

  • Request a copy of all personal data we hold about you
  • Request that we delete your personal data

To make either request, please visit our contact page.

Note: We may need to retain certain data for legal, security, or administrative reasons even after a deletion request.
