HP Laptop 15-fc0468AU Review: Budget Value, But Age is Starting to Show

There’s always been a market for no-nonsense budget laptops. Not everyone needs an OLED display or a cutting-edge processor. Sometimes you just need something reliable, affordable, and capable enough to handle everyday tasks without breaking the bank.

The HP Laptop 15-fc0468AU sits firmly in that space. It’s a Harvey Norman and Domayne exclusive, currently on sale at $898, and at first glance the specs look reasonable. But dig a little deeper and there are some things worth knowing before you pull out your wallet.

This is actually a close sibling to the HP Laptop 15-fc0466AU I’ve reviewed a few months back, so if you’ve read that one, some of this will feel familiar. I’ll call out the differences where they matter.

How I rate HP 15-fc0468AU Laptop

A decent budget option at $898, but an ageing processor, washed-out display, and noisy fan mean you're making some real compromises to hit that price point.

Design and Build Quality

The overall look and feel of HP 15-fc0468AU laptop

The HP 15-fc0468AU (BL2C3PA) has a clean, understated look in natural silver with a matte finish. It won’t turn heads, but it looks presentable enough in a classroom or home office setting.

At 1.59kg it’s reasonably light for a 15.6-inch laptop, and the compact dimensions make it easier to carry than some larger 15-inch machines.

The build quality is where things get a bit ordinary though. The chassis is plastic throughout, and it feels it. There’s noticeable flex in the lid and the base, and the overall rigidity isn’t confidence-inspiring if you’re someone who moves their laptop around a lot. For a laptop sitting at home on a desk, it’s fine. For students throwing it in and out of bags every day, it’s worth keeping in mind.

The fan noise is also worth flagging upfront. Under any kind of load, the cooling system gets audible. It’s not the loudest laptop I’ve come across, but it’s noticeable enough to be annoying in quiet environments like libraries or lecture theatres.

Display

View of HP Laptop 15-fc0468AU Display & Keyboard

This is the area that needs the most honest discussion.

The 15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) panel delivers a sharp enough image for everyday tasks, and the anti-glare coating helps in brighter rooms. The flicker-free certification is a genuine positive for anyone spending long hours in front of the screen.

But there are two numbers that tell the real story:

  • 250 nits brightness – this is low. Indoors in a well-lit room it’s manageable, but near a window or anywhere with natural light it’ll feel dim and washed out.
  • 45% NTSC colour gamut – this is the bigger concern. Most decent laptop displays cover at least 72% NTSC or 100% sRGB. At 45% NTSC, colours look flat and lifeless compared to almost any modern alternative.

For basic tasks like writing documents, spreadsheets, and web browsing, it gets the job done. But if colour accuracy matters to you at all, whether for photo editing, graphic design, or just wanting your screen to look decent, this display will disappoint.

It’s also worth noting the 16:9 aspect ratio. Most laptops at this price have shifted to 16:10, which gives you more vertical screen space for documents and web pages. The older format feels a little cramped by comparison.

Performance

The AMD Ryzen 5 5625U is a Zen 3 chip released back in 2022, which means it’s now four years old. It handles everyday tasks without drama, but in early 2026 this processor is well behind what newer laptops are shipping with. Newer Ryzen series chips offer meaningfully better performance and efficiency, and they’re now appearing regularly at similar price points. If you’re planning to keep this laptop for several years, that generational gap will only become more noticeable over time.

For web browsing, Office applications, video calls, and streaming it handles everything without drama. It’s not going to struggle with everyday tasks, but don’t expect much headroom for anything more demanding.

The good news is the RAM situation. The 16GB DDR4 is confirmed dual channel (2x8GB), which meaningfully improves integrated graphics performance compared to a single stick setup. For AMD Radeon integrated graphics, dual channel makes a real difference, particularly for anything graphically demanding. You can read more about the importance of dual channel ram in my guide.

The 512GB NVMe SSD keeps things snappy for everyday use, and boot times are quick.

Keyboard and Trackpad

The full-size keyboard includes a numeric keypad, which is handy for anyone working with numbers regularly. Key spacing is reasonable and the typing experience is comfortable enough for extended use.

There is no backlit keyboard on this model. For a laptop at $898 that’s not unusual, but it’s worth knowing if you work in dim environments.

The trackpad is smooth and supports Windows Precision gestures. Scrolling and zooming work reliably and the surface feels good under the fingertips. No complaints here.

Ports

The port selection on HP BL2C3PA laptop

The port selection looks reasonable on paper, but there’s an important catch with the USB-C port.

The single USB-C port on this laptop supports data transfer only. It does not support charging and it does not support display output. That’s a significant limitation in 2026, where many users rely on USB-C for connecting monitors or charging via a single cable. You’re locked into the AC smart pin charger that comes in the box.

The two USB-A ports and HDMI 1.4b cover the basics, and the headphone/mic combo jack handles audio. But the USB-C limitation is worth knowing upfront, especially for students who might be expecting more flexibility.

Battery Life

The 41Wh battery is small, and paired with a processor that isn’t known for outstanding efficiency, real-world battery life is going to be limited.

Expect around 3 to 5 hours of typical use covering web browsing, documents, and video calls. Push it harder and that number drops significantly. For a student who has power access during the day, it’s workable. For anyone expecting all-day use away from a charger, it’s going to fall short.

The fast charging is a genuine help here. Getting to 50% in roughly 45 minutes means a quick top-up during a break makes a reasonable difference.

Webcam and Audio

The 720p webcam with privacy shutter is standard budget fare. It handles video calls adequately in good lighting and struggles in low light, which is typical at this price point. The privacy shutter is a practical touch.

Audio from the dual speakers is thin and lacks any real depth or volume. It’s fine for private use at low to moderate volume, but you’ll want headphones for anything more serious.

Where to Buy

The HP 15-fc0468AU laptop is a Harvey Norman and Domayne exclusive, so your options are limited to those two retailers. The current sale price of $898 (down $400 from RRP) is where the value story sits. At full RRP this laptop would be hard to recommend, but at $898 the equation is more reasonable.

Unlike some other laptops I review, the Officeworks Price Beat Guarantee doesn’t apply here given the exclusive retail arrangement.

Pros

  • Dual-channel RAM configuration (2x8GB) delivers better integrated graphics performance
  • Reasonably lightweight at 1.59kg for a 15.6-inch laptop
  • Fast charging gets you to 50% in around 45 minutes
  • Flicker-free display reduces eye strain during long sessions
  • Numeric keypad is handy for number-heavy work
  • Decent storage with a proper NVMe SSD

Cons

  • Ryzen 5 5625U is a four-year-old processor, well behind current alternatives
  • 45% NTSC colour gamut produces flat, washed-out colours
  • 250 nits brightness struggles in well-lit environments
  • USB-C port is data only with no charging or display output support
  • Noisy fan under load
  • Plastic build lacks rigidity
  • Small 41Wh battery limits all-day use
  • Realtek Wi-Fi is less reliable than Intel alternatives
  • No backlit keyboard

Final Verdict

The HP 15-fc0468AU is a budget laptop that does enough to justify its $898 sale price, but not much more than that.

The dual-channel RAM is a genuine positive, and for everyday tasks the Ryzen 5 5625U gets the job done. But the four-year-old processor, genuinely poor display quality, noisy fan, and small battery mean you’re making some real compromises to hit that price point.

The display is the biggest concern. At 45% NTSC and 250 nits, it’s one of the weaker panels you’ll find on a modern laptop. If you spend any significant amount of time looking at a screen, and most of us do, that’s something you’ll notice every single day.

For a home user who needs a basic machine for light tasks and doesn’t plan to move it around much, it’s acceptable value at $898. For students carrying it daily or anyone who values screen quality, there are better options worth considering at a similar price.

If you want to see how this compares to close siblings, i’ve reviewed two very similar models worth checking out. The HP Laptop 15-fc0466AU covers a near-identical machine in detail. I have also reviewed the HP 15-fc0433AU, which shares the same basic specs but comes with only 8GB of RAM and sits around $200 cheaper. If budget is tight and 8GB is enough for your needs, that one is worth a look. But for most users, the extra RAM in this model justifies the price difference, especially with RAM prices expected to remain super high until at least next year.
